Hong Kong governor and poet laureate appointments
The Queen appoints Sir Henry Pottinger to govern Hong Kong as governor and commander in chief. William Wordsworth is named poet laureate, succeeding the late Robert Southey. Military promotions follow across regiments with officers advancing by purchase or appointment, including Cornet and Lieutenant roles in the Life Guards and various line regiments. Marriages and social notices close the column with brief local items and sensational anecdotes from Peninsular era society.
