Suspicion rests on union man in neck wound case

A dangerous assailant fled his home after the offense. On Tuesday evening last a girl nearing her home was stabbed in the neck by a person seen only vaguely. Three deep wounds, likely a peculiar instrument, narrowly missed the carotid artery. No identification yet, but strong suspicion points to a union member and motive remains unclear.

Dublin society notes and disturbances at the theatre

An Irish correspondent reports on Earl de Grey’s theatre appearance, Dublin politics, repeal agitation, and civic entertainments. The Mansion House meetings urge memorials to the Lord Treasurer, while O'Connell condemns press nonreporting. A grand civic event with French consul Mons Marcescheau prompts praise of hospitality amid Franco-British tensions. Police raid gambling hells in South Frederick Street and Pitt Street, detaining dozens for examination.

Insane Crowding of Notes Leads to Glasgow Lunatic

In Glasgow a man named Big Coleman, erratic and fixated on Sir Robert Peel, demanded two clerks to assist him in London. Policymen enticed him into a noddy and he was sent to the Glasgow lunatic asylum. He had been a shoemaker with a pension and a wartime wound, and the incident prompted commentary on other nearby mad cases.
