Murder and attempted murder in Rouie Court Fetter Lane
A police constable on duty heard cries of murder from No 4 Roue Court Fetter Lane. He found a woman with severe facial and head wounds and a man with a carving knife, who wounded the officer before escaping but was recaptured. The injured constable and landlord aided the victims. William Gough, about 30, was committed to Newgate on a capital charge after evidence from lodgers and the doctor confirmed grave injuries. The case drew a crowded court audience at Guildhall, with the prisoner claiming provocation by his wife.
