A heated Westmorland canvass discusses Sir Polhill Calvert Denison and Pallmer with idle talk of plumpers and freeholders. Speakers urge rapid polling, pledge future service, and defend Catholic emancipation within the Corn laws debate.
At five o'clock Tuesday evening the Reading Borough election ended. Official tallies show Mr. Monck with 580 votes and Mr. Spence with 492. Mr. Pallmer recorded 488 and Mr. Wakefield 366, with the Mayor declaring Monck and Spence the winners.
The record notes suspicions about vote acceptance procedures. A claimant would face the returning officer with disputes over whether their vote should count. It cites concerns that votes favored by a committee were admitted in prior elections and stresses the need for scrutiny to prevent injustice.
In Oxford on June 15 the resignation of the Solicitor-General created great surprise. Everyone I spoke with agreed the move was unexpected and that Sir Charles Wetherell might have not only entered but perhaps led decisively, described as riding the foremost horse.
On June 16 the High Sheriff oversaw the county election in Oxford Town hall. Proclamations and precepts were read as a show of hands favored Ashurst and Stratton despite jeers for Fane. A poll for Fane was ordered and set for Broad Street at 1:30 PM.
In Cambridge on Friday afternoon the university election closed after Mr Bankes agreed to end polls at one o'clock. The final tallies showed Sir John Copley and Lord Palmerston elected with 631 and 607 votes respectively, Goulburn 487, and the Senate dissolved after oaths and writs.
In Lancashire on Friday June 16 a third candidate, Alexander Nowell of Underlay Hall Westmorland, enters the Lancaster contest opposing Lord Stanley and Mr Blackburne. A crowd-backed poll is deferred to tomorrow at 10 o'clock after a show of hands favored Stanley Nowell. The Under Sheriff postpones as no contest arrangements exist.
After a violent struggle the contest ends with the resignation of Sir Godfrey Webster on Wednesday evening. He plans to offer himself for the county at the next opportunity. The gross poll totals show Lord G Lennox 496, W S Poyntz 4, Sir G Webster 364.
In the Crown Bar at the Castle a county election poll opened at two and closed at six with no further voters. The High Sheriff proclaimed Sir T Ackland and Mr Bastard duly elected to represent Devon in Parliament.
The High Sheriff and a record gathering of gentlemen entered the hustings in Somersetshire as the nomination was fixed for Tuesday at twelve oclock.
