Canada has spent hundreds of millions at home and abroad to support Britain in World War I. Preliminary census statistics report Saskatchewan population rose from 402 438 in 1906 to 640 835 in 1916, a 41.55 percent gain. Villages nearly doubled over five years, towns rose about 16 percent, farm holdings grew to 104 000 with 36 800 098 acres, and total land reached 156 745 000 acres. Livestock rose sharply with horses and mules up 67.2 percent, cattle up 50.6 percent, and milk cows up nearly 78 percent.
The nation pushed for compulsory service inspired by British and allied models and sharpened by its Civil War experience. Early in the Civil War the North relied on conscription and voluntary enlistment to shape its military forces.
An executive gathering in Humboldt, attended by D. McNicol of Wadena, Calvert of Lasigan, J. and others, discussed aligning Liberal and federal Conservative forces to unite in support of the war effort.
