State Opera Company Begins S W Queensland Tour

Man Believed Killed by Lightning at May Downs Station

Charles Shea of Rockhampton was found dead in a hut on May Downs station about 109 miles west of St. Lawrence. He worked on contract fencing there. A heavy storm in the area on Friday led authorities to presume a lightning strike. The body is being brought to Rockhampton for a post mortem examination.

Freak storm causes heavy cane and property damage near Mackay

In Mackay district heavy damage feared with cane fields flattened and outbuildings blown down after winds up to 70 mph. In a five mile belt north and south of Kuttabul store, farms report damaged sheds, uprooted trees, smashed windows, and irrigation damage. Farmer A J Watt estimates about £1000 of cane ruined. postmaster Mr A E Pill notes residents call it one of the worst storms in memory.

Bushfire volunteer dies from burns in Sydney region

A volunteer firefighter Brent, an officer with the Australia and New Zealand Bank, died from burns sustained while responding to bushfires that broke out in the district. About 300 firefighters battled the blaze as high winds fanned flames for most of the day. Brent was hospitalized after being injured. the fire’s tension eased only last night.

Man Kills Three Over Shrunk Trousers in Milwaukee

Milwaukee police say Clarise Walls, a 32 year old Black war veteran, shot three people at a dry cleaning shop after claiming his trousers had shrunk. Victims included Marnard Parness and his wife and an employee. all were white. Walls said he was unhappy and sought satisfaction.

CANBERRA. The Federal Government was no more willing to damage the Commonwealth Bank than it was to harm private trading banks, Mr. Menzies said yesterday. 14 Killed in Wild Riot in South Africa

Reuters reports in Kimberley that 14 Africans were killed and about a dozen police fired Sten guns to quell rioting in Port Elizabeth. Four more Africans were feared dead. police retreated under attack as mobs wrecked a beer hall and dispersed crowds. Justice Minister Swart announced a state of emergency would be declared in Port Elizabeth, though government plans did not intend to use force.
