The United States and the Soviet Union hold firm positions as four power diplomacy advances. Negotiations move toward a four power foreign ministers conference despite uncertain decisions by involved nations.
Canberra reports serious issues in forming the new Menzies Ministry over senior portfolios and the Senate Presidency. Contention centers on the Resident Minister in London Harrison seeking Defence, transferred to McBride, and the potential presidency offer to Senator McLeay with extra pay and perks. Allocation of External Affairs carets also creates NSW compensation pressure, with several ministerial vacancies discussed and potential overseas postings for J Francis or London postings for T W White as others move. The opposition accuses the PM of dictatorial moves, urging Senators to resist.
The Queensland Dairy Men's Organisation president, Mr. C. H. Jamieson, returned to Brisbane from Cairns and announced completion of a direct farm costs survey. The Gloucesters and the 170th Independent Mortar Company received a United States Presidential Unit Citation for their stand during a Communist spring offensive. The battalion held positions for three days without food or water before being overrun, with 40 to 50 survivors and up to 20 missing, killed, wounded, or captured. Lieutenant Colonel J. P. Garne was among the missing. General Van Fleet praised the unit’s courage, saying the stand would be remembered as exemplary defiance.

A 13 year old Finch Hatton pupil plunged into the Pioneer River fully clothed to save seven year old Maurice Deuness from drowning near the Pioneer traffic bridge. Fisher Jim Everitt joined the effort and pulled Maurice to the bank. Maurice’s father Mr S G Jenner said his son would be honoured with a medal.
Melbourne tote workers threaten to strike at Flemington races over 10 shillings a day extra pay. The Totalisator Employees Association delivered a last minute ultimatum to Automatic Totalisators Ltd demanding full acceptance of their claims by 5 pm. The company suggested referring the claims to a wages board. Manager Arnold Raymond stated the firm refused to capitate but expected 450 employees to attend.
Six jubilee courier cyclists from Darwin Cairns Alice Springs Perth and Victoria completed a marathon ride to Parliament House Canberra carrying Jubilee messages for Prime Minister R. G. Mensies. They rode in cold wind with schoolchildren, escorted by trucks from across Australia and New Zealand.
Brisbane reported ex private Kenneth William Gibbons, 36, who just arrived aboard the freighter Ares, says he will defy a suspended jail sentence to reunite with his Japanese wife and two-year-old daughter in Tokyo. He has endured two prior gambles with deportation and four months in solitary in a Japanese prison after trial by a Japanese court. He claims immigration queries and denials from Australia Canada and New Zealand governments hinder his plan to bring his family to Australia.
A miner Crichton was trapped when coal collapsed from the face as he worked with his brother Dave and deputy E Arnit located him. Rescuers freed him, ambulance crews splinted and treated him underground, and an Ipswich doctor and later hospital staff transported him to Ipswich General Hospital and then to Brisbane General Hospital where his condition remained very serious.
Hollywood reports film star Warner Baxter died Monday night after a long illness. British actor Herbert Marshall is critically ill from a pulmonary blood clot after a minor hernia operation on April 23. Shirley Temple underwent an appendectomy after collapse while driving through town. Hospital attendants said her condition was excellent yesterday.
TOKIO reports progress in a limited U N Korea operation with casualty tallies rising. The Eighth Army notes heavy enemy resistance on the left flank while South Korean and American forces press forward around Seoul. Casualties surpassed 2940 yesterday, with most losses borne by Communist forces.
Brisbane to Toowoomba and Brisbane to Southport will gain radio links carrying up to 22 channels each during 1951 52. Deputy Director C Faragher says VHF links need a visual path for the radio cam and hill top repeaters will be free along the route. Since December last 59 trunk channels added, some via a modern carrier wave system including a 12 channel Brisbane Townsville link. Preliminary work for Brisbane Dalby and others planned. Queenslanders make over a million trunk calls monthly, a record since October and still rising.
Washington President Truman challenged General MacArthur's proposals to broaden the Korean conflict, warning expansion could trigger wider war and jeopardize Japan. He warned against acting alone, stating the dangers to unity of free nations and the risk of atomic escalation if the war widens. He urged cautious policy to avoid triggering a broader war.
