Upper Freestone Obituary Reflects Early District Ties

Mrs M. J. Noble dies aged about 63 after a long life linked to Warwick and Freestone. Born in England she arrived in Moreton Bay in 1858 with the Smith family aboard the Alfred, later settling at Smiths Corner. She first wed Owen Rippingale, first teacher at Upper Freestone State School, and helped run their farm. After his death she married W. Noble, who died in 1935. Surviving relatives include W. W. Noble and Mrs W Slade of Toowoomba, with other kin in Murgon and Gatton. Her family once counted 3 children lost in infancy, 2 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. She recalled early settlers and hostile encounters with indigenous residents. A 1939 Smith family reunion in Warwick marked a last link. Miss Annie Smith of Murgon died soon after. Recent weekend guests included Mr and Mrs L. Hildred and Dawn of Stanthorpe, and Mr and Mrs M Willett of Gatton. Mrs Willett fell ill and was treated at Warwick Hospital. The local school resumed after a period of closure under Mr Cecil Thompson.
