May’s figures show an 11 month deficit of £378.7 million Australian, with exports lagging imports by a wide margin. A bulk of remaining import licences from Japan are to be revalidated for shipments before September 20, while nonessential licences will be cancelled. Prime Minister Menzies told British industrialists that Australia hopes restrictions won’t last long but warned against another wool boom and urged cooperation to ease British exporters’ difficulties.

Captain P Dalziel said the ship endured a 17 day cyclonic storm from New Zealand to Sydney and was towed into Newcastle by the salvage tug St Giles after being laid to sea 103 miles on Thursday morning. The ship carried 895,329 super feet of timber for Sydney and Port Kembla. Dalziel called the storm the worst in 35 years and noted engines ran at full speed ahead for nine days while the vessel stood still, then struck a westerly. The crew used cargo to preserve coal.
