Betty Pax of RAND RAPIDS Michigan regains ability to walk after a second fall. She previously fell from a wheelchair last April and is now walking again, despite prior mobility challenges.
Canberra reports a devastating bushfire at Mount Stromlo destroying the Government Observatory workshop and equipment worth about £100,000, two prefabricated houses, and 500 acres of pine forest. The fire prompted evacuation of nearby residents and a large volunteer response as authorities warned of high fire danger across the state and potential risk to the city.
Treasurer J Walsh noted a seven month surplus of 2,307,308 ending January 31, up from a prior year deficit. Consolidated revenue rose to 23,730,087. Meanwhile bushfires roared through 100 NSW forests, prompting a ban on lighting fires until February 22 and mobilizing 1,000 volunteers, police, soldiers, and airmen.

Dugan, serving a life term for armed holdup at the Bank, has begun a hunger strike after a sentence of 14 days solitary confinement for attempting to escape Grafton gaol. He refuses to speak to warders and communicates only with other prisoners, while a wall doctor and officials consider transfer. Desmond Maxwell Jones, a fellow long term prisoner, also attempted escape by cutting steel bars last October.
