British and American troops clash with Germans along the Anzio perimeter in a day of hard fighting. American forces push toward Cassino, seizing two hills and reporting near Rome a distance of about 16 miles from Albano.
Moscow reports Russian air assaults advancing before ground forces attack rail lines between Kingstepp and Narva. German accounts claim strong Soviet pressure south of Cherkasy and near Kiev as two huge Russian armies push westward toward Lake Pelpus. Baltic fleet moves to cut Nordic iron ore ties. Germans retreat toward Narva as Cossack patrols recapture villages and press toward the Estonian border.
South African Air Force Spitfires surprised an enemy light cruiser in Zara harbour Yugoslavia and shredded its anti aircraft guns. Australian Air Force Kittyhawks later hit the cruiser and observed her sinking by the stern.
AP reports Pearl Harbor dispatch that carrier planes raided the Marshalls for a second day while battleships and cruisers shelled atolls within 10 to 20 miles. Nimitz is directing vast naval forces as airfields appear largely neutralized. radio silence remains. Pacific Fleet communiques list strikes on Kwajalein Roi Maloelap Wotje Jaluit and Eniwetok with air and surface forces. Japanese reports claim fierce fighting as enemy units press the Marshalls.
London reports Admiral Doenitz leads anti invasion drills with 150 ton mini U boats manned by eight at Kinemunde and Gdynia bases. Designed with Japanese help these two torpedoes carrying boats launch from depot ships carrying four minis. Some units reportedly moved by land across French ports to operate against the Channel.
Six Japanese lances destroyed, 17 planes shot out of action, 23 on the ground, 22 ships damaged, and 640 Japanese planes reported shot down in January. Fighters numbered 616 identified, far above December. Allied losses were 7 aircraft. Over Rabaul many ships and crafts damaged or destroyed.
Moscow correspondents describe the evacuation of Chudove ruins and note how Govorov’s Leningrad offensive remained secret until the first Red Army barrage. Leningrad residents sought cover believing the Wiclery raid was German.
Southeast Asia reports say allied land forces advanced a mile from Razabil in Arakan against stiff opposition. Chinese forces in Hukawng Valley made a further push. United States heavy bombers struck Yenandvaung oil installations causing fires. one aircraft missing.
Allied air forces pounded Berlin Frankfurt and Brunswick in major operations over the weekend. US and RAF crews reported heavy daytime and night attacks with thousands of tons of bombs, while German defenses claimed losses and minimal German air activity near the Berlin target. Casualties and damage were reported in London raids as well.
The Premier announced government plans to build test homes in the north and north west to decide the best modern types for those regions. Two homes would be built at Townsville and two at Cairns, with further builds planned in the north west to meet local climatic conditions.
Major General Kenyon A. Joyce of the U S Army serves as acting deputy president of the Allied Control Commission for Italy. He leads the effort to enforce armistice terms and integrate the Italian economy to support the war against Germany. He reports directly to General Dwight D Eisenhower, Allied Commander in Chief in the Western Mediterranean.
