Graf Spee Sinks Off Coast After Scuttling

The Graf Spee was blown up and scuttled five miles off the Uruguayan coast. Debris and sections of the ship surfaced as salvage attempts and investigations began in Montevideo. German officers claimed the vessel was forced to surrender after failing to leave harbor before a deadline.

German Cruiser Sunk By British Submarine

London reports the British submarine Urvala sank a German Kompsberg-class cruiser on December 14 near the Rhe. The vessel, armed with 8 218 mm guns and four 3.5 inch guns, was set on fire and abandoned as explosions and flames spread. German captain Hane Langedorft and crew were later reported to be en route to Montevideo after protests at Buenos Aires.

Queensland Wheat Board hints at advance to growers
