Chimp named Dick attacked spectators and disrupted a golf course after escaping confinement at Griffith Park Zoo. He punched a man, knocked over a photographer, and dented cars with a putter. Attendants tried ropes and a net to recapture him while onlookers fled.

Melbourne reports a warder shot and Kevin Joiner killed during a failed escape from Pentridge gaol. Maxwell Skinner, 23, recaptured after a fall. authorities plan a governmental inquiry into gaol administration. Joiner had a homemade pistol. Skinner had previous escapes and his sentence extended by the incident.
The Australasian Society of Engineers state secretary said the union would recommend a return to work at Eveleigh workshops and Enfield railway yards. The strike, seven weeks old, has caused canal grass buildup in the western district totaling 270.0 tons, with substantial corn stocks accumulating in the north.

A car rolled down a slope near the Mt Cros pumping station in Ipswich injuring four adults and two children. Victims include Vadin Grigorieff and Agatha Grigorieff, both shocked, Alexander Grigorieff (12) and Michael Grigorieff (1) with wounds, Victor Palun (11) with a head injury, and Galnia Palun (19) with back and head wounds. The driver, Mr Grigorieff, attempted to leave the scene but lost control. Victims received first aid and hospital treatment. Victor Palutt admitted.
A spectator vaulted the fence and struck rugby league referee Davey Lawler during a first grade match at Leichhardt Oval. The blow sent Lawler to the ground as South Sydney beat Balmain 18 to 16. The assailant fled, was pursued by police, and a 28-year-old man was later charged.
Brisbane reports a federal cabinet decision on an eight million pound loan for Mt. Morgan sulphur works is awaited. Mr. J Malcolm Newman of Morgan Mines Ltd says his firm would operate the plant, using iron pyrites to produce ammonia sulphate and sulphuric acid, with overseas experts backing profitability despite high capital costs. The project could yield 100000 tons of fertiliser and reduce reliance on imported ammonia sulphate currently subsidised at £500000.
The Maryborough Federal Band, led by conductor J. J. Kelly, won the grand aggregate at the Australian brass band championship at North Ipswich Reserve. The band has been champion four years running, scoring high in the square march hymn tune and No 2 selection. All players are local residents in Maryborough.
