Managing director Vernon Smith states prospects of oil within permit boundaries are unfavourable, surrendering permits and withdrawing parties. Canberra Monday The Defence Minister Mr G A Streets reports the central register of medical practitioners for national emergency shows over 64 questionnaires sent with about 75 percent returned. About 1230 signified willingness to enrol in the Army Medical Corps reserve and nearly 950 under 40 offered to serve in the AIF the Army and the RAAF. Those above 41 not asked for fighting roles due to no shortage of medical officers. About 2720 noted willingness to serve with the AAMC in a hospital or base unit and almost 3000 were willing overall. In addition to civil duties, 1580 offered to act as locum tenens in their districts and almost 2300 indicated readiness to give full-time attention to the civil population in an emergency.
A man posing as an arm amputee and deaf and dumb visitor beguiled a Melbourne housewife, collecting about £1 daily before police exposed the ruse. He carried a concealed arm and was charged with vagrancy after a brief inquiry by an onlooker.
A three year old boy and a five year old girl, children of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gordon of Parkes, drowned when a flooded creek swept their car downstream near Lake Endeavour Dam 16 miles from Parkes. Mrs Gordon escaped with one child and her baby, while Mr Gordon and the other two children were trapped and injured, taken to Parkes hospital in immersion and shock.
