ML JONES AND HIS LITTLE ROOSTER BECOMING FAMOUSHut a few months ago Col. Dave Jones of Casey was known only as a country1 (auctioneer. Hjs activities were devoted to the sale of live stock and farm machinery. He was a good auctioneer, withal, and successful as auctioneering goes, H's reputation did not extend beyond the confines of his county. Today all this is changed, He Is now known In several states, he tand his .little black rooster, “Jack Pershing”The story of the genial colonel and his little black rooster rpads almost l:ke a story. At any rate it would make a good subject for a gripping human Interest story. In a day, os it; were, Col. Jones and “Jack Pershing'’ have flashed Into the limelight of fame. Today the pair are knowfrnot alone in western Iowa, but In Nebraska and South Dakota us well.Col. Jones1 sudden plunge into the limelight was as much of a surprise to Irmself as to his friends. One rtuy at an auction which Ire was conducting over near his home he put up for sale a little black rooster. The proceeds were to go lo the Red Cross. Quite a low dollars were garnered in this sale for the Red Cross work. A few days later the colonel again offered his bird- for sale, the rule being in each case that the purchaser give the gird back for resale, and aga*n a goodly sum was realized. Again and again “Jack Pershing’1 was sold, and with each suceeding sale the amount of money realized was larger than any previous sum. The zenith was reached up at Extra several weeks ago when the rooster was sold for something like $7,000. One, two and three thousand dollar sales were common. At Elankintou, S. D., the little black fellow brought $2,625. Down at Cumberland a few days ago he ulso brought a big sum. All the money goes to the Red Cross.Col. Jones now does little else besides travel about and sell “Jack Pershing.” If the reputation of the colonel and his little rooster continues to grow it Is not entirely outside the pale of possibilities that his auctioneer of Adair counky may some day run for congress or the governorship, jut there by his little black rooster.BIJY WAR SAVINGS STAMPS
