Burr Artz Library through the courtesy of Samuel Duvall Schell, prominentWashington attorney, Frederick I citizen and, at the time of the launching, executive director of the United States MaritimeCommission The first Victory ship built on the East Coast at the Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard, Inc , it wasnamed after the City of Frederick through the influence of Mr. Schell, and through the cooperation of Admiral Howard L. Vickery, then in charge of Maritime construction, and Admiral Emor^ S. Land, chairman-ad-ministrator. It was put into service carrying troops and army personnel to the United Kingdom and the Continent, returning to the United States 1,400 prisoners of war.Operated by the United Fruit Company, general agent for the government, it called at ports in the Canal Zone, Honolulu, and ( Japan.The SS FREDERICK VICTORY was launched September 9, 1944, in the presence of a number of prominent Frederick ! citizens headed by Mayor Hugh i V. Gittinger and Mrs. Gittinger. ( who was sponsor. iHundreds of Fredericktonians contributed books for the ship’s library and money for its recreational equipment, the Artz Library sponsoring this project for the City.A recent item in the “Twenty Years Ago” column of the NEWS brought the occasion to Mr. Schell’s memory, and he secured from the Maritime Administration of the United States Department of Commerce an up-to-date history of the ship. jJPE ‘Selections Fromm a
