J. D. Prewelt Back From Sniper Work In South Pacific' Still Regards Jap* as 1 Dangerous Enemies After Often Battling ThemT*5 J. D. Prewett arrived inAda last week after returning tothe states from overseas basis.He is the possessor of two battle | ribbons and two stars in addition to a good conduct ribbon and a ribbon designating that he was in the service before Pearl Har- ! bor.During his 32 ifionths overseas, i ! Cpl. Prewett saw plenty of action and was on 11 islands and 14! ships before returning to the states on the rotation plan. !| Most of the action he saw was j \ in New Britain and Dutch New Guinea where his outift encountered some Jam Imperial Marines ! who were battle hardened and were expert riflemen.Cpl. Prewett's outfit was known as “bush fighters” as they ) had to clean the islands of Jap I i snipers, who were plentiful. || During one stay on the front I lines, 16 days of fighting took j place out of a total of 60 days on the lines. His fight on New Guinea lasted four days. j When asked just what he did, he said that he was an expert rifleman and got to use his rifle plenty. “I saw plenty of Japs, j I and most of them were tide in !! trees as snipers,” he said.| “When you are behind a bush and shoot at something, you had better move, but quick, because i j bullets will be coming your way ' shortly. j“We could move a bush and j bullets would whine toward it j and at the same time the Jap sniper would give his position away and was an easy target.“Jap snipers are hard to find and they are plenty dangerous before they can be located,” he said.Cpl.
