Directors of Football League clubs decide to cancel all fixtures after the coming weekend to curb pools betting and propose announcing games only on Thursdays before Saturdays. The Scottish League will not follow this.Officials seek Home Secretary action to stop pools amid rising betting totals and mail handled by the Post Office.
In northern Queensland several railway bridges remain under floodwaters though levels began to fall this morning. Officials hope rail services to Townsville can resume this evening. Between Undina and Cloncurry more rain fell and the line was washed out in multiple spots.
In Rome and Addis Ababa casualty lists show Marshal Badoglio stating Abyssinian losses from 5000 to 6000 killed and 10000 wounded with many prisoners, while Italian losses tally 12 officers and 122 other ranks killed, 24 officers and 499 wounded, plus 62 Askari killed and 83 wounded.
Nearly a thousand million attendances were recorded at picture theatres in Great Britain in 1934. They yielded a gross revenue to the industry of over £40,000,000, with the Government collecting about £26,000,000 in entertainments tax. Total film length shown exceeded 5,000,000 feet.
Berlin reports a nationwide series of one hundred lectures to rally public sentiment for reclaiming former colonies lost in the war. Major Schnoec kel of the Nazi Colonial Department argues a new League of Nations would be hostile to Germany and calls for restitution of colonies as a matter of justice. A second speaker cites messages from former colonies hoping for German rule again.
The remains of Pilot Edwin John Small killed in the ar mash at Cordeaux dam were interred at Randwick cemetery with a saluting flyover and wreaths. A quarrel over property between Carmelo Garasolo and Allesandro Schievynin at Farm 1368 left Garasolo critically wounded by shotgun. Narandera Griffith and Yenda police arrested Schievynin on malicious wounding charges. Garasolo admitted to Griffith Hospital with extensive jaw injuries and little recovery hope.
The British Broadcasting Corporation announced that King Edward will address the Empire at 4 p.m. Sunday with simultaneous transmission from British transmitters. The broadcast will be heard across colonies including Sydney time at 2 a.m. Monday.
A guard on a special military train returning from Goulburn military camp was struck by shattered glass when a stray bullet hit the carriage a few miles from Harden on a Wednesday night. The stormy darkness led investigators to believe the shot was intentional.
The House of Copland announces Miss Adams becomes head milliner in the workroom section. She arrives with credentials from a leading Sydney house and brings what is described as the latest in fashion. The town of Wagga is invited to welcome the new arrival and her expertise.
A combined conference of unions at Port Kembla iron and steel foundry will meet Monday to review the position and plan distribution of strike pay. Carpenters and builders at Australian Iron and Steel Limited Port Kembla stayed on strike. Newcastle unions to consider financial support for Ft Kembla strikers.
The Royal Commission on racing in Queensland urged that betting shops remain unlicensed and that betting for gain be made a criminal offence.
After a nine day hearing in London, Garabed Biskirgian and John Howeson each received 12 months in prison while Laura Hardy the managing director got nine months. Biskirgian faced charges for circulating a false prospectus. The case concerns alleged attempts to corner the pepper market, risking £400,000 for shareholders. Leave to appeal granted.
