Flying Boat Crash Kills Nine Off Malta Mission
A flying boat crashed into a hillside near San Filippo at 11 15 in heavy clouds and storm. All nine aboard the Royal Air Force plane from Nipples to Calatrana, Malta, perished in the fire. Among the dead were two officers six crew and a technical official including Flight Lieutenant Beatty, nephew of Lord Beats. Local carter found the wreckage and showed a piece to police as Red Cross workers and firemen aided in the three hour trek to recover four bodies. Rescue was hampered by rain and lack of roads.
