Fishermen report bait shortages and mixed cod catches
The codfishery dips due to bait scarcity as squid and caplin dwindle. Small herring are caught and general fishing remains productive when bait is available. Fishermen prefer frozen herring or squid over caplin, which spoils after freezing. On the South Coast and Banks caplin remains a main bait for Newfoundland crews. Freezing bait for future use may benefit quality with further research.
