Master of the North East settlements and fisherfolk
The narrative follows an English apprentice who, at about fifteen, rises to clerk in a merchant firm aboard trading schooners serving northern outlying settlements. He becomes a schoolteacher and local leader known as The Master, teaching, justice work, post duties, and land management across growing coastal communities, while recounting harsh winters, sparse supplies, and frontier life.
