Hymn Lovers' Column on Psalms in Worship History

The essay traces Psalms’ central role from early Christian private devotion to medieval and modern worship. It cites early documents and Augustine, notes the development of metrical psalms in England, and references famous tunes and hymns, including The Lord's My Shepherd and the Old Hundredth, used in state and church services. It discusses reformer influence, the continued popularity of psalm-based hymns, and the evolution toward newer hymns while preserving ancient songs.
