Overcrowding on Labrador Steamers Sparks Port Access Debate
Northern fishermen and other laborers face repeated early spring travel bottlenecks as two pre-season sailings fill before many from surrounding communities can board. Proposals call for reserved space for at least twenty fishermen and guaranteed minimum headcounts per port, or a limit on passengers from each port to St. Anthony. The aim is to avoid public wharves and repeated travel, prevent lost fishing time, and ensure summer work for forest workers and wood shippers. Steamship managers and the Nild Railway are urged to address these access issues.
