An intense heat wave last week raised temperatures to record highs across Twillingate and the island. In the worst heat, two men collapsed on a building site, three dogs died at the Arm, and a local fish dealer, Harvey Sharpe of Crow Head, halted cutting fish tongues as they fell apart. A trap crew discarded twenty five quintals of fish that cooked on the flake, and fish began to fall apart in handling after landing from traps.
The week saw dog fish show up with Capt. Wm. Bulgin reporting he took more than twenty barrels from his cod trap on Thursday. Market demand for this pest to the fisheries remains elusive despite many names including grayfish flake and sea eel.
Two horses offered for sale Golden and Mounte Leon. Golden red, 1060 pounds, eleven years old, fast trotter and walker with strong cry. Price reduced from 300 to 275 dollars cash. Mounte Leon red and white, 1100 pounds, eight years old, strong walker and trotter. Originally 340 dollars, price 360 dollars cash. Both touted as high quality and proven performers.
