His Majesty approves a Royal badge for those invalided from the naval military air forces merchant navy and fishing fleet due to war service since 1939. Designed by Percy Metcalfe the one inch white metal badge carries a crown cypher and inscription For Loyal Service. Distribution by the Ministry of Pensions will be automatic with no application needed. Supplies expected in a few weeks.
On Tuesday at St Andrew's Church the marriage united Edna Mclean Gray Ashbourne and Flerbert Gillett. The bride wore a white taffeta gown with long sleeves, a tulle veil, orange blossom coronet, and a long train. Her bouquet featured pale pink taping, snapdragons, fern and baby's breath. Edna is the daughter of Mrs A G Ashbourne and the late Mr Ashbourne, while Flerbert is the son of Capt. and Mrs J. Gillett, with the ceremony performed by Rev Goodland and the bride given in marriage by her uncle Norman Gray.
The ceremony featured Minas Louise Ashbourne Maid of Honor and Misa Gillett bridesmaid in pale pink chiffon. Ushers William Ashbourne and Walter Facey, with flower girls Bessie Ashbourne and Ruby Facey, attended. After the church, luncheon was served and the couple departed for Lewisp rte en route to St John’s for a honeymoon in Angle Brook.
Twillingate native Thomas Skinner died June 21 in Toronto after a long career at Ashbournes Ltd. and William Ashbourne. He left Newfoundland with his sons about 15 years ago after a period with A. E Hickman Co in St. John’s.
