Legislative Downreil May 15 House debates Railway Act

The House met at 4 30 p m to consider amending the Railway Act. Members discussed funding and purchase price concerns for the Harbor Grace line, debating whether to grant the government a free hand in negotiations. Cables from delegates were read but not signed, triggering calls to delay or proceed with the bill as circumstances warranted. The committee reported the bill without amendment and it moved to third reading.

Members oppose conveyancing bill as six and seven clauses struck

In the May 29 session the House, after debating the Loan Bill, moved to the Conveyancing Bill. Mr Angel chaired. Mr Tasar defended it as a technical measure protecting public interests. Mr Mackay urged striking out the 6th and 7th clauses as onerous, unfair to non lawyers, and contrary to rights. Mr Renbenn supported removal to avoid restricting legitimate business. The committee, after removing clauses, rose to report progress and adjourn.
