Room For Improvement in Newfoundland's Growth and Industry

A letter argues Belgium and Holland are too small to support their populations while Newfoundland could prosper with 3 million residents. Industrialist Julio Metal praises Newfoundland's resources and strategic location between Britain and the U.S. He cites timber growth at Salmonier and the Placentia Bay plan, urging scientific capital investment to lift living standards and spur industry and export potential. The piece ends with optimism and the notion that there is "lots of room" for development.

Preparedness words from Chamberlain amid looming threat

Prime Minister Chamberlain reiterated that Britain and France fight to preserve civilization against tyranny. He urged peace defiance and national readiness for heavier attacks and sacrifices as Germany likely plans a general offensive via Belgium and Switzerland. Hungary fears Nazi attack while Romania weighs Russia and Italy pressure.

Nations ready for major attacks amid war forecasts

The Prime Minister claims full national preparedness to meet major attacks, signaling possible pauses by the Nazis rather than wide losses to the war effort. Submarine and warship losses rise, railway costs surge as the Danube freezes and unloading burdens grow. Royal Air Force reconnaissance over 800 miles into Germany and Austria yields strategic intelligence, reflecting a broader Allied push to defend democracy and curb Nazi armament.

English buyers favor Norwegian and Icelandic fish, risking loss of the Newfoundlanders market. Protests call for better relations and unity to win the war effort.
