Lion gaze failed hunter wins near-fatal encounter in India
Ensign and Birmingham resident O F Stewart recalls a 1874 lion hunt in India. A lion leaped into his path, he froze under the beast s eyes, then five companions fired and killed the lion as it sprang, saving his life. He survived with weeks of recovery after a four hour unconscious spell.

Shenandoah Maiden Voyage Sailship Reaches New York Harbor
The Shenandoah, one of the largest four masted sailing ships, arrived in New York from Bath Maine on its maiden voyage. The vessel displaces about 5900 tons, carries 11000 yards of canvas, and measures 190 feet on the main mast with vast spars. It will sail between New York and San Francisco, powered by steam windlass and a 30 horsepower hoisting engine.
