The Evening Telegram reports Martin Cahill of Bell Island was identified posthumously through a 1914 pay book and rusted identification plate found with his remains. His missing body, killed in World War I, was recovered and buried in a consecrated grave after 21 years.
Martin Cahill, born in St Johns and raised on Bell Island, served with Newfoundland volunteers in World War I. He died July 1, 1916 at Beaumont Hamel. His pay book and rusted wrist identification plate were returned to his mother, confirming his grave location years later.
