In a fishing voyage Cooper nearly drowns after losing balance on the bait gangboard. Peter Hodges and George haul him back aboard amid fear and relief as the crew tend to him and continue the voyage despite the danger.
A fragmented passage shows a character recalling a hot drink and water relief, then defiance and resolve. Peter laughs as Coover's color returns, while another narrator contemplates giving up and facing a changing wind. Hodges appears in the inner monologue.
A vivid, rough dialogue scene shows Wil urging a sale as Peter and Cooper exchange taunts amid laughter. Cooper reacts with a wan smile, sharing a secret thought while water drips from his nose and fish surround them. The passage ends with a tease: to be continued.
