Calamity in Trinity Bay prompts Newfoundland House adjournment
The Newfoundland House of Assembly opened at 4 pm on Feb 29 1892 with news from Trinity Bay of a severe disaster. About twelve men were found dead at Trinity Harbor twenty four reached Hearts Delight and seventeen more were located at Tickle Harbor Point. An estimated two hundred men were exposed to freezing conditions over the weekend. The government launched relief efforts including dispatching the steamer Labrador with a medical officer and promising further aid. The House adjourned until March 3 to allow a relief appeal and solemn observance.
