Mysterious River Tragedy as Sixteen Year Old Drowns
An inquest at the Feathers in Dean Street, Westminster, into the death of Henry Rawtell, sixteen, son of Mr. Thor Bawtell. A party including four brothers and Christian Ficken sailed from Lambeth Walk to Richmond in a four oared cutter with gin and porter. After a tavern stop and river stop at Chiswick they attempted to pick up a young woman and Ficken steered, then Boyle the others to the boat. The deceased disappeared overboard near between Putney and Battersea bridges while Ficken, sober, claimed uncertainty. Emily Detmaring saw the drowning. Ficken later claimed the accident was caused by his falling from the boat, which others deny. The coroner and jury found drowning with no clear cause. A meeting of the National Union of the Working Classes followed, discussing repeal of the England Ireland union and the rights of the Irish people, urging unity and action.
