An 19th century notice promotes geographic and historical primers by Sir R. Palapa, with praise for their educational value and public benefit. It also advertises a tea dealer Lashmar and Bellingham, listing varieties and free delivery routes across London and surrounding districts.
Fourth meeting of the Hippodrome season with public days on Friday and Saturday September 4 and 6. Gold Cup race for 129 guineas, Handicap Plate, two Fence Hurdle events, and other amusements priced for carriages and pedestrians. Also ads for brandy, watches, and a Smithfield area address.
Racing program for Weymouth features the Weymouth Stakes with 25 added from the Fund, about two miles, twice round, five substitutes. Town Plate offers 30 sovs with 2 sov added per resident, heats over two miles with allowances for age and rider class. Notable entrants include Mayflower, Mendicac, Oberon, Merrymas, Susanne, Doubtful, May Gower, Zenana, Cock Rubin, with mixed weights for thoroughbreds, mares, geldings and riders.
Lincoln residents threaten to stop St Marys Clock until a church rate is granted. After offering voluntary salary, the clock was restarted but then padlocked again amid disputes. Disputants plan action to challenge the churchwardens right to halt the clock. Gateshead council then ordered a 1d annual grant from Street Act funds to maintain the clock due to lack of repairs funding.
A drunken Ruffian chased and struck a seven year old boy, lifting him overhead and dashed him to the ground. The boy lay insensible, bleeding. Passengers aided, a policeman detained the offender, and the man was brought before a magistrate. The boy is in weakly condition after surgery. Intervening citizens were commended for bringing the culprit to justice.
The Birmischam and Barstol Railway Company sues a 25 share proprietor to recover calls due plus interest. Mr Busanguet outlines the act empowering directors to levy calls and interest. Mr Thompere confirms ownership of 25 shares and two calls 20 per share in October and 11 thereafter. Jury awards damages plus interest for plaintiffs.
Nottingham attorney sues Stoke upon Trent ale-brewers over a debt laid on Samuel Shatt. Agents Adams Kenyon and Bas e arrange five shillings in the pound. Evidence shows potential abuse of agency and insolvent debtor relief. Jury verdict returns for defendants. judge upholds jury and rejects objections to verdict.
A crowded Depford court heard St Paul parishioners refuse church rates. John Wade and others objected on doctrinal and financial grounds, accusing churchwardens of excess and misused funds while claiming repairs could be funded without rates. The panel ordered payment or legal action.
George Carter and Samuel Russell, linked to a clothing theft from Sarah Angel, faced Alderman Winchester with Carter acting as porter for Russell. The box was found abandoned, a silk gown valued at 2 pounds with tickets traced to Water Lane. Russell remains sought as Carter claims ignorance of rights, while a porter named Thomas Matthews faced separate fraud charges over forged parcels. A third suspect, remanded for further inquiry, is held over similar deceit involving fake consignments and fake deliveries.
Pearson stood before Mr Jeremy charged with stealing a chest of tea from wholesale dealer Mr Storriker. Elizabeth Potter a well-dressed town girl faced Mr Broderip charged with felonious cutting and maiming William Campbell a seaman in his lodgings at Stepney. Campbell testified he was stabbed in the breast and cheek after a drink with James Wardle and Potter boasted of more harm before police seized her. Potter committed for trial for capital offence. The Thames scene then covers the Echo brig incident with Navigation Court remarks on Pool regulation and penalties under harbor law.
George Bennett of Goodge Street Tottenham Court Road faced judge Mr Shutt for whipping Charles Mizen a gate keeper of the Regent's Park. Bennett’s arm in a sling and finger broken by a blow from a gate staff. Complainant alleged repeated assaults during motor carriage attempts and at a crescent gate. Bennett claimed provocation and liquor influence. Gate keeper John Darby and others supported the case. Humphreys argued provocation and danger to wife. Shatt fined Bennett for misconduct.
LAMBETH-STREET. John Saunders alias Jeremiah Sullivan and Charles Thompson, linked to the swell mob, faced Mr. Combes on a charge of stealing a gold watch from Mr. Norbury of Beaumont-square Breptey. Norbury testified a window note invited tenants viewing the house and the watch disappeared from a bedroom stand. Witnesses, including a youth and a laborer, described the pursuit and a watch tossed into Parson's ground. Mrs. Norbury ill, while witnesses said Thompson threw away the watch. a boy returned a watch to a shoemaker, then a policeman. The magistrate ordered remand for further evidence from Mrs. Norbury and her servant.
Charles Childs writes to the Times defending his father against church-rate accusations, denying involvement in church matters, and challenging the paper’s portrayal of local politics. He claims his family sought no favor from church authorities, disputes references to Bedingfield, and asserts the Times misrepresented his father and himself.
Yesterday morning two youths Hawkins and Reeveley were rowing near the Penitentiary, Millbank when the boat struck a mooring chain and overturned in strong tide. Hawkins clung to the chain, but Reeveley was swept away and drowned at about fifteen years old.
