Middlesex Sessions Hear Licensing and Poor Law Appeal

At Middlesex General Quarter Sessions the Overseers case supported by Mr Bodkin upheld an order against a putative father for parish reimbursement of infant support until age seven. Licenses to theatres and public amusements were granted or refused. the Royal Kent Theatre petition was denied amid debate on morality. A Dumfries Bank fraud suspect was captured in Liverpool and returned to Dumfries. Various petty thefts and distress cases led to short sentences and mercy recommendations.

Woman in Hoxton Attempted Canal Suicide After Abuse

Yesterday a respectably dressed Hoxton wife, wife of a builder, was charged with attempting to drown herself in Regent's Canal after years of domestic ill treatment by her husband. Constable Kemp described how she was dragged from the water and revived by Dr. Baker. She testified the husband beat her during their sixteen years of marriage, and she would try to return only if she could trust him. The magistrate urged the husband to keep the peace. she was discharged and he secured his own recognizance.
