Nullity of Marriage Declared in Arches Court

In Arches Court Sir Herbert Jenner presided over Hopkins versus Thomas falsely called Hopkins. The suit sought a nullity of marriage on affinity after proving a common ancestor and the wife having married the nephew of her late husband. The court held the marriage null ab initio and refused to award costs, citing the widow’s needs and the age gap.

Burglary and Larceny Convictions at Old Bailey Trial

At the Central Criminal Court Old Bailey on November 27, Thomas Hobbs alias Holmes, aged 26, was convicted of burglary. A series of larceny convictions followed including Margaret Walton 28, William Carter Baxter 42, Sami Tripp 42, Christopher Johnson 21, John Hood 27, and several younger defendants. Acquittals included Henry Brown 23 and others. A New Court section lists additional larceny, embezzlement, and uttering counterfeit coin convictions, with numerous names and ages and items stolen or embezzled.

ANOTHER INCENDIARY BY ATTEMPT AT ROTHERHITHE

A fashionable young man named Charles Jones was charged at the King’s Bench with pocket picking from surgeon Joseph Healy at No 13 York Street Bryanston Square. Healy identified seven new muslin handkerchiefs and a parcel missing. A police constable recovered the parcel and a pen knife and small scissors on Jones, who denied the charge yet was committed for trial. A separate case involved cab driver John Moore charged with negligent driving in the Strand, breaking a cabriolet panel, and paying fines and damages. the master covered the costs.
