Williams and Company Soho Gerrard Street advertises cash terms for teas and coffees. Black teas range 3s 11d to 5s for Congou. greens 4s 4d to 8s. 8d. Hyson 7s. Coffees from 1s 4d to 9s 4d. Trade supplied on advantageous terms.
John William Harris is examined for writing a letter threatening Hale. Bail is refused as enmity appears with handwriting evidence. Two chimney sweep brothers express a wish for the trade. Hospital plans are discussed. At Bow Street a provocation case ends with bail. embezzlement charges follow. In Hatton-Garden a man’s love fraud is dismissed. Islington case ends with breach of promise exposure. A cabman is fined for a near collision. Thames Police ends with a humorous marital dispute at the magistrates' bench.
The St Pancras parish vestry debated enforcing poor rates after a magistrate Mr Goodchild refused payment. Speakers argued vestry legality, considered a distress warrant on Goodchild, and unanimously approved asking Mr Williams to issue warrants. The meeting adjourned with plans to pursue the distress route.
Public business at the Brighton cabinet council focused on appointing the king’s commissions for the China trade superintendents to replace the East India Company supercargoes. With April nearing, authority and credentials must be forwarded. The Gazette will note Lord Howard de Walden as Minister Plenipotentiary to Lisbon, Sir Edward Desbrow to Stockholm, and Lord William Rugsell to Stuttgart.
The 61st district meeting of the Licensed Victallers' Protection Society met at the George, Commercial road, to rally support for trial notices in the Court of Exchequer. Speakers urged broader aims including trade protection, anti robbery, and legislative petitions, with three treasurers appointed and donations recorded. A general meeting was set for Friday at the Jolly Gardeners, Lambeth walk.
The court heard Bridget Clooney describe assaults by her daughter in law Betty including tearing a handkerchief and tearing her hair. Nelly Butler testified to a storm of scolding, tossing of teacups and furniture. The magistrates ruled an assault occurred and fined Betty Clooney 23 shillings and six pence or fourteen days' imprisonment. Betty was told to leave the house owned by the complainant.
