Useless militia staffs urged for disbandment

Meeting of Goldsmiths and Jewellers Union Formed

A large meeting at the Mechanics Institution Roll’s buildings Chancery Lane approved the report and rules for a Goldsmiths and Jewellers Union. The group aims to curb wage-hour abuses, unite workers and protect honest employers through a ballot controlled committee. Funds totalling 711 pounds 3s 6d were reported in hand, with a plan to raise 1,000 pounds through weekly contributions of sixpence.

Widow Mrs Bird Dies At Saffron Walden Aged Seventy

Colchester Gazette reports the death of Mrs Bird widow aged sixty seven at Saffron Walden on Tuesday. The frugal woman spent much of her life as a lodger provider in the town and hoarded large sums though scantily fed. An old box revealed three hundred sovereigns and other cash forwarding to a distant relative, with instructions for a modest funeral.
