A large gathering at London Town Hall with 1300 attendees chaired by Earl Harewood debated the proposed emancipation plan. MPs, peers, and shipowners warned emancipation could confiscate property, harm commerce, and endanger the navy, calling for fair compensation and prudent action aligned with 1823 resolutions.
The General Steam Navigation mail packet Mountaineer from Rotterdam reached the Custom-house at two o clock pm on Sunday. Passengers included the Marquis of Cowanshire and his son. Dispatches for Austrian and Prussian ambassadors were carried by Baron Warnhard and Mr Genrick. Public opinion supports the slain officer Robert Culley s family and criticizes the Morning Chronicle for abandoning its cause, while the Ring Advertiser is criticised by some as a substitute. The sentiment spreads along the southern coast and to towns such as Chichester Brighton and Lewes.
The Royal Adelaide steamer carried about 400 passengers on a Whit Monday pleasure trip from London Bridge for the St James's Union Benevolent Asylum. The voyage along the Thames and Medway included views of fleet ships, Southend, Margate, and Sheerness, with a festive mood and plentiful provisions though crowded decks. The event supported a home and coal for life for aged members of three societies, with speeches by the secretary Mr. Russell praising patrons and urging continued support.
