Falmouth reports at six p.m. that the Flamer steamer has arrived with authentic intelligence of the capture of Figueira on the 8th by Admiral Napier. The vessel obtained the news from the City of Edinburgh steamer on the 9th, delivering the official account to Lisbon.
A Cambridge correspondent reports master tailors there refuse to hire journeymen unless they declare they are not in the Trades Union and will not join while employed. Deputations are refused and men may be advertised for under these terms. A Lamb's Conduit Street tailor, using piece-work, withholds pay if any thread is unkept and delays wages to the whole group.
A Macclesfield Courier summary reports operatives in the silk trade seceding from the Trades Union in Conglian, provoking threats and military presence as authorities deploy a squad of cavalry and infantry to prevent disturbances. Correspondent notes Leeds cloth masters force a May 12 declaration ending union membership, triggering widespread layoffs and mass meetings at Woodhouse Moor as magistrates prepare special constables. Manchester Guardian cautions readers to weigh the copied statement carefully.
Mills remain in full operation except Seville and Wright Medlock mill after unionist pressure and a demand for notice before leaving work. Threats, guard renewals, and violence against workers prompt meetings among master tailors and journeymen. LAW INTELLIGENCE. MITCHELL v. LAPORTE details promissory breach over a three year engagement at Covent Garden starting Sept 18 1832. Mitchell quit Strand for Laporte then faced theatre closures and half salaries, leading to damages claimed up to 2801 pounds. Also short notes on Hay v Harmer, Staveley v Walker codicil case, and Insolvent Debtors Court motions.
Reports from Bow Street detail John Berry's three month commitment to hard labour for absenteeism, a Wardour Street pocket-plot involving a boy and lord, thefts by Ellen Garrin and Mary Ann Hopkins from Bond Street shop, and a brutal assault in Regent's Park. Additional cases include Joseph Weir's knife threat at Old Street and a Bermondsey robbery noted by an overseer.
In a case before Mr Burchell the court ordered an execution rule absolute against Mr Howell for debts in his schedule but delayed until after July to allow payment.
