The Old Maiden's Talisman and Other Tales Review

A critique of three volume tales by Chartley author and Grimstone. The Old Maiden's Talisman features Lady Mary Deningford and a talking talisman that reveals others thoughts, ending in tragedy rather than moral. Peter Snook and The Gentlemen in Black receive sharp, satirical treatment. Cleone, a Tale of Married Life is praised for virtue and gentle moral tone. Efingham Wilson’s Es, though light on plot, conveys benevolence and steadfast female virtue through Sidney Mountwarren.

Engagement at Rilvas Alters Portuguese Conflict

A clash at Rilvas near St Ube between about 200 Donna Maria troops led by Calza Pina and insurgents left 30 dead, 11 prisoners, and 9 horses on the Miguelite side while 1 was killed and 3 wounded on the insurgent side. The British cutter Scorpion, trying to reach Vigo and then Viana or Figueira, was captured at Camina with stores and two Miguelite agents aboard after Spanish batteries forced her aground at Guardia. Two more fast-sailing cutters are en route to Vigo from Plymouth to aid the Miguelites, with another squadron vessel near the Bayona Islands and a cruising steamer. Twenty-two Miguelite officers have arrived at Vigo to join Donna Maria. A decree may soon allow all goods to be shipped and re-exported with minimal duties, effectively making Lisbon a de facto free port, a measure attributed to Silva Carvalho.
