Middlesex Magistrates Elect Chairman Amid Court Deliberations
Yesterday the Middlesex Magistrates met at Clerkenwell for selecting a Chairman to replace B Roteh and to handle county business. About sixty magistrates attended as Sir Peter Laurie supported Captain Acklow for the chair. The session reviewed the House of Correction with 806 prisoners and discussed the Grand Junction Railway plans. A proposal to supply prison bread from labor was defeated 19 to 9. The court examined weights and measures legality and noted New Prison Clerkenwell as among England’s worst, excluding Newgate. Correspondence with Lord John Russell outlined a government appointed chairman for judicial matters, while magistrates retain their own chairman for county affairs. The Dean of Carlisle urged printing the correspondence. the chair election proceeded with scrutineers Flower and Orme, and the ballot produced 2% for Serjeant Andrews before adjournment to Thursday.
