An officer of the 8th British Legion writes from near St Sebastian dated June 13 1836 describing daily alarm before dawn, brutal engagements with Carlists since arriving at St Sebastian, heavy casualties in June 6 action, rapid attacks on Carlist positions, captures of key outposts, and anticipation of further attacks on Hernani with heavy fighting likely. The account notes officers and soldiers killed and wounded, and mentions Lord John Hay and the presence of marines and Spanish troops.
A letter praising the Lords rejection of the Irish Corporation Bill as a step toward reform. The writer argues the decision will energize reformers, calls out Lyndhurst and others, defends Irish rights, and urges continued patience and unity for freedom and justice in Ireland. Signed by W. At Middlesex Sessions on June 30 Captain Jeff Sharp of Twickenham was introduced as a magistrate. Appeals over pauper settlements were heard. One case involved a rate set by Grosvenor estate trustees for road repairs and lighting. the appeal was dismissed, upholding the Grosvenor Act powers. A separate report notes a rebellion at St Cyr Military School where thirteen pupils were punished. likely to be sent to Paris prison or assigned to regiments, per Galignani's Messenger.
In Gray's Inn Lane Workhouse a pauper James Filby attacked staff with a broom after demanding more work and protesting diet changes. He assaulted wardens and two beadle witnesses. a magistrate ordered him to pay 1 pound 7 shillings or face two months’ imprisonment.
In Ivry near Fontainbleau two men, M. Fouquet junior and M. V A Carrier, entered underground works to survey a gas project. A collapse buried them for 30 hours, with a 500 franc reward offered for their recovery. They emerged alive, having endured starvation and confinement in the labyrinthine quarries.
