Great New York Conflagration Destroys City Warehouses

The New York fire of the 15th razed upwards of six hundred houses and vast warehouses in Pearl Merchant Exchange and surrounding streets, destroying post office and Exchange offices, with losses estimated between twenty and thirty million dollars. Firemen battled frozen hydrants as winds raged, forcing evacuations and calls for public aid as authorities prepared to move offices and bolster credit amid widespread ruin.
