Central Criminal Court hears the trial of Thomas Tipper once an officer of the county police charged with receiving a stolen pocket book from Edward Vine on December 13. The evidence shows Swindle and Hammond implicated, with Tipper claiming to have found the book and sought to restore it. Jury acquits Tipper. numerous others are convicted of various thefts.
The following prisoners were capitally convicted Thomas Fry aged 30 John Alvertson alias Green 135 William Johnson alias Kelly 22 of burglary. The following were convicted of larcenies George Glover aged 35 of stealing a cashbox and 4254 Richard Combron 27 of stealing nine pieces of cotton tint Alfred Hooker 18 of stealing an ox Frances alforn 21 of stealing a bundle of rags Mary Black fore 20 of stealing two pewter pots Frederick Jordan 20 and Henry Davis 20 of stealing a pair of reins. The following were acquitted Edmund Thacker aged 25 Henry Roberts alias Chappell 21 Bernard edo 66 Rotstuck Lemana 39.
Charles Denyer alias Tyler alias Freeman was found guilty on four indictments for stealing watches entrusted for repair. He owned a Stockwell shop, pledged owners’ property, and reused repaired watches to obtain them again. The jury convicted him and he received a fourteen year transportation sentence.
William Davies of Westminster was charged with obstructing a footpath by placing baskets of vegetables outside his shop. Magistrates ruled the ground private, ordered baskets returned, and dismissed the case. Also reported are pent-house removals in New Cat and a Thames waterman fraud case resolved after a settlement.
Fragmentary OCR notes discuss George the Third and tax debt during his reign. It mentions taxes, debt interest, and a commentary on fiscal policy of the era. The readable items present a rough outline of historical taxation under the monarchy.
