Petrels Followed Ship to Valparaiso in Two Varieties
From latitude 22 south in the Atlantic a ship bound for Valparaiso was trailed by petrels or Cape pigeons. Two kinds, spotted and silvery, appeared. The spotted variety is larger than a domestic pigeon yet lighter due to plumage. It has three-toed webbed feet, black eyes, a hooked bill, and a white breast with black and white back and wings. The silvery type is similar in size with a white breast and leaden, silvery back and wings. Both sail gracefully and sometimes skim the surface for crumbs. when captured they may eject stomach contents and a yellow oil with a fishy odor. Three Years in the Pacific.
