Five tannery workers drown in River Thames tragedy
On Saturday night five young men employed in tanning in Kent-road went to Rotherhithe and played leap-frog near Cherry Garden Stairs. Three wandered into the river in fog and drowned after assistants failed to reach them. A Waterman named Thomas Carver also perished when his skiff struck a barge off Woolwich. A fisherman and his son died after colliding with a haneer at Limehouse Beach. Additional river accidents occurred Saturday and Sunday, with several watermen and seamen killed. A barge left Deptford Sunday night with a lighterman and two boys and has not been heard of.
