Court sentences Barnett for assault on wife at Worship Street

Sir William Curtis imposed three months in the House of Correction, a 10 fine to the King, and a bond to keep the peace for twelve months. Mrs. Barnett appealed for mercy, and Barnett sought mitigation while Beazley and the Serjeant negotiated. A second hearing restored the sentence with conditions and ordered bail for Mrs. Barnett.

Unstamped papers seizure leads to Marlborough Street inquiry

In a Marlborough Street hearing an applicant sought the result of a seizure of 98 unstamped newspapers from a lad employed by a news seller. The magistrates explained the policy to seize papers while letting sellers be cautioned, with forfeiture of all papers and future strict enforcement. In a separate Queen Square case a middle aged woman was charged with stealing velvet from Southwall and Wallace. Northamptonshire Election Violence and Nomination Scene

On Tuesday December 15 Northamptonshire held a heated nomination scene marked by bands, banners, and a mob clash as horsemen in Maunsell’s interest charged the crowd with blunt weapons.
