Melancholy Accident at Tower Wharf Drowns Boy and Heroic Watchman
On Sunday afternoon a eight year old son of Sergeant Cropper of the 1st Guards fell into the Thames at the Tower wharf and drowned. An Irish watchman who could not swim plunged after him and was soon drowned. An officer witnessed the heroic act from a distance and awarded the watchman a sovereign for his bravery.
Hops improve across Maidstone area as crops show promise
From the Maidstone Gazette August 26 report, hops in Maidstone ground show yield gains from two to five or six bags per acre. Matuings grounds advance with flea and fly damage mitigated by clipping, lifting expected yields to four to five bags per acre. Hunton Linton and surrounding grounds display large bines and rare large specimens, with some areas promising five to six cwt per acre. Boxtey prospects remain strong with Blacklands and other plots improving, while Marpen and Sutton Valance see steady gains and anticipated three bags per acre averages. Cold weather may delay harvest by a week or ten days, with others aiming for seven cwt per acre in Thesurst and Garemony areas.
