IMPERIAL PARLIAMENT DELIBERATES ON PEERAGE AND BEER BILL

The House of Lords debated the Netherville claim to a peerage and voting rights for Ireland. Several bills including Church Temporalities in Ireland and the Beer Bill were read a third time and passed. Contested amendments to beer shop closures and visiting hours were discussed, with opponents decrying infringements on liberty.

Pirate attack and loot on a brig from Demerara at sea

Captain Hayward of the brig Lester reports a pirate schooner from St Andero and Porto Rico attacked on June 26 at latitude 21 13, long 61 28 W. The raiders, 40 to 50 men, rifled cabins, took provisions and valuables, threatened crew, but all hands escaped as the pirate bore away. The captain paid 50 Mexican dollars as a token gesture. The crew included English, American, Portuguese and Spanish men. The report from Gravesend notes local pleasure gardens and a curious carp glimpse.
