Youth Swallows Poison During Forged Bank Cheque Attempt

A young man, likely under 20, dressed fashionably, presented a 2001 cheque to Coutts & Co in the Strand drawn on William Thomas Paxton. Sir Edmund Antrobus questioned the signature, the note passed through clerks, and the youth swallowed emeraldum powder before being stopped. He, named John J. Levien of Penton-place Walworth, was arrested for forgery. Medical staff treated him. a note suggested self harm if the cheque failed. His case goes to Bow Street.
